During the six-month period between October 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, the Society of Saint Vincent dePaul (SVDP) was able to provide over $80,000 in food, help with utility bills, and clothing. And, of course, there is no monetary value to our home visits, listening to people, and prayers.
Some highlights include:
The core of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is he home visit. During a home visit, two SVDP members meet with the neighbor in need to just talk with them and discuss their needs, and to pray with them. Many people report that this is the most important thing that SVDP does.
We provided over $48,500 worth of food to about 310 households (consisting of over 900 individuals) during this period. The food was donated by Holy Spirit parishioners and the Southeastern Virginia Food Bank. Volunteers from the Holy Spirit Men's Club picked up and delivered the food items from the Southeastern Viriginia Food Bank.
In addition to food items, SVDP gave over $8,200 in gift cards for Food Lian and Kroger grocery stores.
During this six-month period, SVDP was able to assist over 70 of our neighbors in need with over $15,700 in utility bills. This enabled many families to avoid a disconnect notice of vital electricity and water services.
The SVDP Clothes Closet gives people an opportunity to select gently used adult clothing that is donated by parishioners of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. About 90 households (123 individuals), selected several hundred items of clothing with a value of about $2,100.
